POTW #12: Froslass

It freezes prey by blowing its -58 degrees F breath. It is said to then secretly display its prey. Only one ability for little miss Froslass, Snow Cloak. In a normal battle this is the closest thing you'll get to "breaking the evasion clause" as it increases Froslass' evasion by 20% in a hailstorm. Obviously using this in a hail team is a good idea, since it brings down normal moves to a minimum of 80% accuracy, and "the worst move in the game" Stone Edge down to 60%, which can make a whole world of difference. It also makes Lass a decent switch-in to most sleep moves apart from spore, since they'll be dancing along 55% accuracy or less. M o v e s e t s "Froslass: Self Harming from Turn 1" Froslass (F) @ Focus Sash Ability: Snow Cloak EVs: 252 SAtk/252Spd/4 Def Timid Nature (+ Spd -Atk) -Spikes -Taunt -Destiny Bond -Ice Beam Being an Ice type can be tough nowadays. With Scizor launching Bullet Punches everywhere, and Rocks Stealthily hidden along the battlefield they usually don't end up lasting very long. Froslass is the only Ice/Ghost Pokémon in the entire game, and with it's supporting movepool and a lovely 110 base speed, it finds itself being used more and more as a lead, boasting immunity to both Fake out and the ever common Explosion. If you've played with a Smeargle lead before then you should feel right at home with Froslass. Get in, set up some spikes then take someone down as they KO you. Ice beam is your best choice against most leads, getting 2HKOs on Azelf, Hippowdon and Aerodactyl. Against the above leads, it's always in your best interest to Ice beam first, as they commonly carry Taunt. Speaking of Taunt, it shuts down leads trying to set up stealth rock themselves, or annoy you in various other ways, such as Roserade's sleep powder. The whole point of this is to get spikes up, the original entry hazard, letting you slowly chip some health off all non levitators and flying type Pokémon. Against leads such as Infernape and Swampert you should be able to get off either 2/3 layers of spikes, or 1 layer of spikes plus a free kill. "MadMan (even though Froslass can only be girls, let's just say this one's into cross-dressing)" Froslass (F) @ Babiri Berry Ability: Snow Cloak EVs: 248 HP/8 Def/252 Spd Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Disable - Protect - Hidden Power [Fire]/Thunder Wave - Ice Beam/Blizzard But of course, setting up spikes isn't the only thing froslass is good at. It can also make a damn fine annoy-er. Abomasnow is absolutely required to be on your team. Its ability, Snow Warning, brings permanent hail onto the battlefield and activates Froslass’s ability. Doing so increases Froslass's survivability and the effectiveness of this set. It's not so much a lure, as it is a scout. If you protected on a choice user, then Disabled their only move, they can't stay in unless they fancy struggling and chipping off 31% of their hp, thanks to the hailstorm. Hidden Power Fire is here for the many many Scizor's you'll be attracting, scoring a 2HKO on the standard Choice Banders (59.48% - 69.97%). Thunder Wave is also another alternative due to all the switching going on as you're providing team support. With the opposing Pokemon paralyzed and hail falling, Froslass will only be hit by a 100% accuracy move 60% of the time. Obviously if hail is active go with Blizzard, but for use on a non-hail team Ice Beam is the better option. C o u n t e r i n g F r o s l a s s If you're Normal, fat and pink you're a good counter for Froslass. Blissey takes basically no damage, has natural cure to bypass Thunder Wave and can softboiled easily while burning lass to a crisp. Snorlax works as a much more offensive Blissey, with Thick Fat and Fire Punch/Crunch replacing Natural Cure and Flamethrower. Clefable is probably a better counter than Blissey, simply because it has magic guard so not even confusion and paralysis will affect it. If you're tired of Normality, Tyranitar's a safe bet. Sand Stream immediately takes out any hail falling on the field and can threaten Froslass with Pursuit, Crunch, or Stone Edge. Its ability causes a sandstorm, giving it a Special Defense boost, which allows Tyranitar to shrug off any Ice Beams. Scizor and Metagross can both come in on Ice Beam or Shadow Ball and bypass Froslass’s speed with Bullet Punch or catch it switching out with a Pursuit. O v e r a l l O p i n i o n Froslass can boast to being the only ghost type able to set up spikes, and therefore the only Pokémon able to block its own spikes being spun away. It's this, and it's supporting movepool that ultimately gets the focus, as Gengar manages to do the whole sweeping ghost thing much better. Being weak to Stealth Rock doesn't help either.
