POTW #9: Dunsparce

It digs into the ground with its tail and makes a maze-like nest. It can fly just a little. Dunsparce has a drill for its tail. It uses this tail to burrow into the ground backwards. This Pokémon is known to make its nest in complex shapes deep under the ground. It hides deep inside caves where no light ever reaches it and remains virtually motionless there. Dunsparce has two abilities, Serene Grace and Run Away. Serene Grace doubles the chance of the additional effects of moves happening. This is the ability responsible for making Jirachi and Togekiss the little hax machines that they are in OU, and it does just the same for Dunsparce. Suddenly Body Slam as a 60% chance of paralysis, Ice beam has a 20% chance of freezing you and Charge Beam increases Dunsparce's special attack all the time. It's probably one of the best abilities in the game, and is really what makes him usable. Run Away is so poor in competitive battling since you wouldn't want to run from a wifi battle and has no other use, so there is really NO reason to not use Serene Grace. M o v e s e t s OMGWTFHAX Dunsparce (M) @ Leftovers Ability: Serene Grace EVs: 144 HP/252 Atk/36 Def/76 SDef Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Headbutt - Body Slam - Rock Slide - Earthquake Apart from its HP, Dunsparce's stats aren't really outstanding. One thing he does have going for him is probably the most tailor made moveset of any Pokémon in the game, giving him all the tools he needs to function well. You should normally start by spamming Body Slam on anything that moves to get some paralysis, as that's the only way he'll be outspeeding anything. From there take your pick of Heatbutt and Rock Slide to slowly flinch your opponent to death, Rock Slide the option for fliers, bugs (which NU is populated with) and ghosts. Earthquake is here to make sure nothing that is a rock or steel type can wall your entire set, and gets unresisted coverage in NU with Rock Slide as well. If you still want to guarantee the paralysis then Thunder Wave can go over Body Slam. OMGWTFSPECIALHAX Dunsparce (M) @ Leftovers Ability: Serene Grace EVs: 144 HP/36 Def/252 SAtk/76 SDef Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Charge Beam - Ancientpower - Ice Beam - Shadow Ball Dunsparce can create headaches for your opponent in many other ways than simply para-flinching, as his special moveset shows. He can actually be a very potent sweeper, given a bit of luck. Which is just as well since we're using Serene Grace. If you use Charge Beam, and it hits, you will get a special attack boost. Combining this with Shadow Ball, which now has a 40% chance to drop your opponents Special Defense by 1 stage, you will be either causing a lot of switches or hitting things quite hard. If you still want to have some fun, Ice beam can freeze your opponent 20% of the time, something that you will appreciate and your opponent will loathe. Finally, Ancientpower lets you do something to Flareon, and the chance of a boost in all of your stats is simply too good to ignore. C o u n t e r i n g D u n s p a r c e If Dunsparce lacks Thunder Wave on the physical set at all it cannot hope to scratch Dusclops whatsoever. Even if Dunsparce does have thunder wave, it has to pray that not only will Dusclops never get a chance to move, but that it also doesn't switch seeing as Bite can only muster 21.83% - 26.06% on the standard Dusclops. Sandslash falls into the same boat, with a Physical defense that is greater than Dusclops but without any healing bar rest, or immunity from his normal STAB. He can then launch off Earthquakes of his own to serverely dent Dunsparce. Hitmonchan resists all the non STAB options on the set, and has Fake Out + Mach punch to bypass any side effects to his speed. The Special set is harder to counter than the physical one, due to all of the effects of his moves and how they could activate at just the wrong time. In a sandstorm Cradily is the best counter, with it's gigantic special defense and access to recover and stockpile to increase both of its defenses even more. A Specially Defensive Dusclops can work, although it has a lot more to fear from a Shadow Ball after even 1 Charge beam. A 252 HP/Special Defense Politoed or Lapras can come in on either the first or second charge beam and take pitiful damage before screwing with Dunsparce in some way through Hypnosis/Sing, Toxic, Haze, Perish Song or a good old Surf to the face. Dunsparce hates status. Get it burned, poisoned or paralyzed and you've made your job a lot easier. O v e r a l l O p i n i o n To be totally honest, it's a good thing Dunsparce doesn't have better stats than what he's dealing with, or even Ice Punch, otherwise he would easily be the best Serene Grace user in the entire game, and force even more children to run from their wifi battles. If you get him to work, he's very fun to play with and sweeping your opponent with a Dunsparce is surely worth using him alone. Use him as he was intended to be used and you'll do fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ My apologies for posting this a few days late, just a lot of things happening. I'm looking for a different path. The physical-based one is just straightforward annoying while the special-based one just loves getting stronger! Yeah, I'm attracted to Pokemon who can attack from either end of the attacking spectrum, like Dunsparse and Seviper.
