Umbreon is #197 of the National Dex and the Johto Dex. When agitated, this Pokémon protects itself by spraying poisonous sweat from its pores. When darkness falls, the rings on its body begin to glow, striking fear in the hearts of anyone nearby. Umbreon evolved as a result of exposure to the moon's waves. It hides silently in darkness and waits for its foes to make a move. The rings on its body glow when it leaps to attack,

Umbreon shares the Synchronize ability along with Espeon. When Umbreon becomes poisoned, paralysed or burned, so will the opponent. However, this does come with some limitations. Fire Pokémon and those with the water veil ability cannot be burned, Pokémon with the limber ability cannot be paralyzed and those with the poison typing, steel typing or the Immunity ability cannot be poisoned. Synchronize is not activated when Umbreon is poisoned by Toxic Spikes however.

The thing with Synchronize is that it's not a bad ability, it's actually a very good one. It's just that you really don't want it to activate. If it activates, it means that Umbreon is most likely burned or poisoned through Toxic, which will severely cut down it's ability to stall, something that most of its sets are based around. Heart Gold and Soul Silver have gone some way to rectify this, giving the Eevee line Heal Bell. This would make Umbreon an effective status absorber and reflector, making the opponent think twice about throwing Will-o-wisps around the place. The downside is that Umbreon would suffer from four-moveslot syndrome, meaning it cannot pack everything it wants to do into just 4 moves. Heal bell would have to go over something such as Taunt, Curse or Yawn, moves that are valuable in their own right.

Trap n' Go

Umbreon (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP/92 SpD/164 Spd
Careful Nature(+SpD, -SAtk)
- Mean Look
- Baton Pass
- Wish/Moonlight
- Taunt/Yawn

Umbreon's role as a Trapper has remain unchanged since the 3rd Generation, and looks to stay as its standard set. Umbreon and Absol are the only two Pokémon that have access to the Mean Look/Baton Pass combination, and Umbreon's defense are much more suited for the job.

The first two moves need little introduction, as they are the basis of the whole set. Mean Look a Pokémon that can't do very much to you, such as Blissey or Luvdisk, then Baton Pass out to a counter or something that can easily set up on the trapped Pokémon. The third moveslot is reserved for your healing move of choice. Wish is more team oriented and allows it to heal both itself and the team-mate in question. Umbreon's low speed and great defenses let it take the hit, then Baton Pass out safely to a team member and receive the wish. If you're looking for more immediate healing then go with Moonlight, although this isn't a great option in OU due to the amount of Tyranitar running around.

The last slot is completely open. Taunt is great for messing up your opponents plans to faze you out of Baton Passing through Whirlwind, Roar or Perish song. Yawn can nail common switch-ins such as Lucario and Scizor and render them helpless when combined with Protect. Toxic can wear down more bulky opponents such as Swampert while trapped, and Heal Bell rids you of annoying status that could be a hindrance for you later on.

"Hey can't I get a witty name too?"

Umbreon (M) @ Sassy
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP/200 Atk/56 SpD
Careful Nature(+SpD, -SAtk)
- Curse
- Payback
- Wish/Moonlight
- Taunt/Yawn

This is Umbreon's attempt to try and pose an offensive threat to your opponent, and with a base 130 Special Defence it can certainly attempt to with Curse, raising its Attack and Defense at the cost of its Speed. This is where payback comes in, a move that doubles in power if the user goes after the opponent. So really the speed boost isn't a negative, it's a positive. Wish and Moonlight is the debate between Team support or immediate healing, and moonlight may be the more favored option in this case due to you not really wanting to switch and lose all your precious boosts in this first place. As with the trapper set, the last moveslot is wide open.

C o u n t e r i n g U m b r e o n

The move Taunt. Umbreon rarely carries any form of attacking move, and even if it does without curse it won't be doing much coming from a probable 166 Attack stat. Gyarados is such an example, and it carries Intimidate meaning Umbreon is just basic set up fodder. Really, if you are somewhat bulky, can learn taunt and not weak to dark then you're pretty much an Umbreon counter.

If you are immune or benefit from Toxic in some way chances are Umbreon doesn't want to meet you. Metagross does not care about anything Umbreon does and can sit down tossing around Meteor Mashes all day, and blow up if Umbreon tries anything with Curse. Scizor is in the same boat, but instead of explosion gets Sword Dance and STAB Bug moves. Heracross is the definition of an Umbreon counter, resisting its Dark STAB, having access to a powerful Close Combat and the Guts ability, which means using Toxic is akin to slapping a Choice Band on him.

O v e r a l l O p i n i o n

It should work. 95 HP/110 Defense/130 Special Defense and a supporting movepool most pokemon would die for, including the exclusive Mean look/Baton Pass combination should seal Umbreon as a top tier player, yet it's drifting further and further into the Underused environment. The reason being that the level of power has increased dramatically from Advanced to D/P/Pt with the inclusion of Choice Specs and moves such as Draco Meteor and Close Combat, meaning Umbreon cannot take hits nearly as effectively as it once could. He does carry out his niche well, but don't mistake him for an all purpose wall like Blissey or Skarmory.

I'm looking for a different path.

Hm... Looks like I can't use him the way I wanted to... Or can I? I'll just have to see what it can do when teamed up with certain Pokemon.

And because of that 4-move syndrome, I'll really need to think this thing through.

For the record, I have a Salon Maiden Anabel obsession. *points at Thorton, who is pointing at the unique picture of Anabel*

We must express ourselves to convey our feelings to others. However, I feel emotions lose their strength once they're put into words. So I prefer to speak only what is absolutely necessary.
